Future Shocked? AI, Skill Demand and Employment in the UK Labour Market
How extensively have artificial intelligence (AI) technologies been adopted by UK firms? And what effects might the adoption of AI be having on the UK labour market? In this work, we use the Active Informatics online job vacancies database for the UK to measure the demand for AI skills over the period from 2012-2019. We relate AI adoption to occupational structure at the company level to test whether the adoption of AI follows a distinct pattern relative to other high-skill technologies. As part of this, we contrast AI to software and robotics, as well as testing for employment effects of AI adoption.
